Object description
A tabernacle in Roman Catholic churches is a chest in which the Holy Eucharist is kept. The Crucifixion on a sphere entwined with a snake was a common theme that professional and folk artists addressed. Such artworks differ in figurative interpretation, though they were created per the conventional scheme. Folk artists endowed their works with unique, somewhat naive features. The figure of the Crucifixion depicts the Savior with outstretched arms. Following the widespread Western iconography, the author portrays Jesus nailed to the cross with three nails. The bare body is covered by a loincloth with schematically modelled folds. The artist depicted the Saviour deceased – his eyes closed, his head tilted to the right. The author's intention for anatomical accuracy is evident in the body interpretation. Above the crucified Christ hangs a plate with the inscription "INRI" – "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". The skull of Adam is depicted under the feet of Christ. With the limited means characteristic of folk art, the master sought to convey the suffering of Jesus, imbuing the image with naive realism.
