Object description
The Flagellation of Christ is an episode from the Passion of Christ, which occurred during the trial by the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate over the Savior. The Gospels provide few details about the flagellation of Jesus, stating simply: "Then Pilate had Jesus taken and whipped" (John 19:1). Behind this concise phrase lie brutal tortures – blows from Roman scourges leaving torn wounds on the body, inflicting excruciating pain. The full-length figure of Christ was part of the sculptural composition. The artist's desire for anatomical accuracy is evident in the work. Jesus' legs are slightly bent at the knees, and his head is tilted to the right shoulder. The master highlights each muscle and meticulously carves the joints of the legs. The raised chest and sunken abdomen emphasise the tension of Jesus' last breath. His body, torn by the blows, is covered with a loincloth. The features of the ascetic, elongated, lean face are thoughtfully crafted. Significant losses of sculpture parts complicate the reproduction of the complete image.
