Object description
Saint Augustine was a theologian, bishop, and one of the Church Fathers. He possessed an exceptionally philosophical mind and underwent a conversion to become one of the most revered saints. Augustine grew up in a family where his father was a pagan and his mother a Christian, yet he did not initially lean toward Christianity. After encountering the notable theologian Bishop Ambrose and through self-discovery, Augustine began to develop as a theologian himself. The full-length sculpture depicts the saint in a classic contrapposto pose with his head slightly tilted toward the right shoulder. The image conveys a wise, sensible, and spiritually strong person through his forehead, somewhat arched brows, small eyes partially covered by heavy lids, straight nose, and neatly closed lips. The front-facing figure with even proportions is rendered in a somewhat slowed movement with a gentle silhouette line. The saint's clothing, modelled with parallel vertical lines, entirely conceals the body's form. The reproduction of the cloak's drapery, which wraps around the lowered shoulders, introduces a subtle emotional liveliness to the overall static image of Saint Augustine.
