Object description
The relief by an unknown artist from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery is a triple representative, commemorative and glorification portrait of Stefan Batory, Sigismund III Vasa, and Jan Zamoyski. Stefan Batory was the King of the Commonwealth, Grand Duke of Lithuania and Rus. In 1571–1575, he was the Prince of Transylvania. He studied at the University of Padua. As a result of the struggle for the throne after a period of kingship, with the support of Chancellor Jan Zamoyski and the nobility, after his marriage to Anna Jagiellon, Stephen Batory was proclaimed Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of the Commonwealth in 1576. Jan Zamoyski was a ruler and statesman of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. A representative of the noble Zamoyski family of the Elita coat of arms. Grand Chancellor of the Crown (1578–1605), senator. Grand Hetman of the Crown (1581–1605). Founder of the city of Zamosc and the Zamosc Academy (1595). An associate of Stephen Batory. Arranged in two tiers, as on sculptural epitaphs of the time, the portraits of the three prominent figures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth symbolise the continuity of power and state greatness in the eyes of contemporary and future generations. The means of glorification are knightly armour, a panoply, and a family coat of arms, typical for memorial plastics.
