Object description
The design of the hand cross belongs to the seven-pointed type with an elongated middle part. The compositional solution is simple, characterised by delicate carvings with a graphic interpretation of details. According to the iconographic solution, the cross from Kolbaievychi village belongs to the third type, limited to two themes – the Crucifixion and the image of the Virgin Mary carved on both sides. The front side of the cross depicts the Crucifixion scene, where the craftsman used a traditional compositional solution. It occupies the middle frame and a part of the central core. The schematised figure of Christ is carved in the central part of the stem on both sides. At the ends of the middle frame are graphic figures with schematic details. The plane of the upper and lower frames is separated from the overall composition. It is filled with parallel horizontal stripes with letters framed by incised bevelled lines. On the back of the handmade cross, using shallow cuts and rounding, the craftsman carved an elongated figure of the Virgin Mary in a crown with the child Christ in her arms. A halo surrounds her head, and the maphorion is decorated with stars. A smooth line along the contour frames all the ends of the hand seven-pointed cross. According to the manner of interpretation, based on the research of M. Stankevych, the object of liturgical purpose belongs to the works of folk artists with pronounced signs of "primitivism".
