Object description
The work of an unknown artist from the Austrian School of the late 18th or early 19th century is a reduced copy of the painting "Saint Benedict Joseph Labre" by Italian artist Antonio Cavallucci (1752–1795), created before 1783 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). The painting by Antonio Cavallucci is a bust-length portrait of the young Saint Benedict in deep contemplation, with his hands crossed in front of him against a neutral dark background. It is believed that the artist created this portrait during the saint's lifetime. Identical in composition but rendered in brighter, more saturated colours, this work is a bust-length portrait of the saint with a halo against a dark blue background. Benedict Labre is depicted as a young man with downcast, sorrowful eyes, short dark hair, a moustache, and a neat beard. The man is dressed in a green cloak with a wide turned-down collar, underneath which a white shirt and a rosary of dark green beads are visible.
