The work by an unknown artist from the late 17th – 18th century is a high-quality copy of a fragment of the "Portrait of a Man" painting by the renowned Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641). This is a knee-length ceremonial portrait of an unknown aristocrat dressed in the fashion of the time in a black doublet with a white turned-down collar and a cloak. The work from the Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery collection is an intimate bust portrait set against a neutral dark background, compositionally and chromatically identical to a fragment of the original. The middle-aged man with short chestnut hair, a moustache, and a Spanish goatee is depicted in a slight half-turn to the left. A striking feature is the wide white turned-down collar of the shirt, illuminated by light. Particular attention is drawn to the large brown eyes of the subject, which convey intelligence, noble calm, and composure.
