Biography
Stanislaw Batowski-Kaczor (January 29, 1866, Lviv – May 5, 1946, Lviv) was a Polish and Ukrainian battle painter and a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine (since 1939). He studied at the art academies in Krakow and Munich. He travelled extensively. From 1891 to 1895, he lived in Paris and Rome, where he honed his skills. Later, he visited Spain, Morocco, and Crimea. He later returned to Lviv, where he lived in his villa on St. Sophia Street (now Ivan Franko Street, 110, the premises of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv). From 1903 to 1914, he ran his painting school. S. Batowski was a co-founder of the Lviv Society of Polish Artists "Young Art" ("Młoda Sztuka") and a member of the board of the Association of Polish Artists in Lviv. He painted historical, battle, and religious scenes and authorised portraits and landscapes. He created illustrations for the works of Juliusz Slowacki and Henryk Sienkiewicz. He also worked on polychromy.
Object description
The artistically designed wooden palette is a gift for the 40th anniversary of the creative work of the composer and conductor Stanislaw Niewiadomski (1859–1936), as evidenced by the inscription on a gold background located at the top of the palette: "Swojemu członkówi Honorowemu Stanisławowi Niewiadomskiemu w XL lecie jego twórczej pracy wdzięczna Lwowska "Lutnia-Macierz" w Lwowie 5.I.1928 (z jednomyślnej uchwały Og. Zgromadzenia 5.XII.1927) Dyr. art.: [donor signatures]". In the centre of the painting, a girl in a pink dress with butterfly wings playing the violin symbolises Music. To her right, a boy with a flute and an old man with a hurdy-gurdy are walking alongside her. To the left is a group of peasant children singing, adorned with flower wreaths and bouquets. Behind them walks an older woman. The festive procession takes place against a sunny clearing framed by trees. Three paint brushes are inserted into the palette's opening.
