Object description
The emblematic bust of a young woman, looking to the left, is reproduced against the background of a conventionally painted landscape with buildings, trees, and a river. The head of the portrayed woman is adorned with a gilded headdress; a gilded three-dimensional ornament is on the puffed sleeves. The portrait was probably painted for the top of an Italian dowry chest – a cassone. Traditionally, after marriage, a portrait of the husband was painted on the opposite face of the chest.
