Object description
Apostles (from the Greek ἀπόστολος – "messenger", "preacher") are disciples and followers of Jesus Christ, preachers of the Gospel. In a narrower sense, the twelve direct disciples of Christ are called "apostles"; in a broader sense, they are seventy companions of the Church chosen by Jesus. There is also the apostleship of St. Paul, who was called to the ministry after the Ascension of the Saviour. The picture of the Apostle from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery is characterised by the Baroque style, which is reflected in the expression of the face raised to heaven, the dynamics of the drapery, and the active interaction with the space of the sculptural forms.
