Object description
Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the most venerated Catholic saints, a preacher who contributed to the development of Franciscan learning. He is considered the patron saint of Lisbon and Padua, of the poor and travellers, and an assistant in recovering lost valuables. In the Gallery's collection sculpture, Saint Anthony is depicted in the Franciscan habit, girded with a rope, in a state of prayerful appeal to the Creator. The peculiarity of the plastic solution of the work lies in its expression, which reflects the Baroque or Rocaille style, and in a slightly squashed and uncertain modelling of the forms.
