Object description
According to the Evangelists, the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, John the Theologian, Mary Magdalene, and Mary Cleopas were present at the Crucifixion. The peculiarity of the depiction of the Crucifixion witnesses in the work from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery is the static, conventional modelling of the figures, the naivety of the expression of grief, and the separation of the sculptural group from the image of the crucified Christ, which signifies the imminence of earthly existence and the duration of eternal life.
