Object description
In the "Raising of the Cross" painting, the depiction of Jesus intersects the centre of the composition diagonally, demonstrating the movement that conveys the key moment of the action. The horizontal and vertical elements of the painting are static, while the diagonal is dynamic. In solving the extremely complex compositional task of creating a plastic connection with many figures, the artist applied the right angle rule, ensuring optimal proportions. The penetrating diagonal visually emphasises the main structural lines of the composition, which express the action. The theme of brutal execution is most often depicted in the altarpiece paintings of artists from Germany and the Netherlands. However, artists typically depicted the Crucifixion as having already taken place. It was perhaps for the first time that Peter Paul Rubens resorted to such a subject, making the viewer a witness to the horrific execution. Following the great artist, the author masterfully replicates the compositional technique.
