Biography
Hubert Robert (1733–1808) was a French artist, a master of landscape and capriccio. He was the first keeper of the Louvre Museum and made significant efforts towards its establishment and development. The artist left behind around 1,000 paintings and over 10,000 original drawings for future generations. He was born in Paris to a prominent family, the son of Francois-Joseph de Choiseul, Marquis of Stainville, who was the ambassador of Lorraine to France. From 1745 to 1751, Hubert studied at the Jesuit College in Paris, after which he spent three years as an apprentice to the sculptor Michel-Ange Slodtz. In Rome, thanks to the patronage of a diplomat friend, the artist received a scholarship from the Paris Academy of Fine Arts for five years and worked in the studio of Giovanni Paolo Panini. During that time, he became acquainted with Piranesi. In Italy, he earned a living by painting urban landscapes. Upon returning to Paris in 1765, Hubert had already established a reputation as a fashionable European painter. Thus, shortly after his first exhibition at the annual salon, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Until 1798, Hubert participated annually in the Paris salons, and his works consistently enjoyed success. Until the end of his days, the artist continued to paint and worked on plans to redesign the Louvre. He suddenly died of a stroke in 1808.
Object description
The painting depicts an interior with staffage. The idealization of the characters is combined with a tendency towards a realistic interpretation of the domestic scene. The masterful rendering of atmospheric perspective is evident. A monochromatic colour palette dominated by shades of golden brown emphasises the architectural theme. Light and shadow nuances bring the entire motif of the painting to life, filling it with space and movement. Hubert Robert is a master of the architectural landscape, with his works reflecting an interest in both antiquity and modernity. The artist made sketches of old ruins, architectural monuments, and ancient sculptures. Later, he incorporated these images into depictions of city life and contemporary customs, allowing the spirit of cultural eras to continue living through time. This technique is employed in the work "Church Interior". His works feature a unique combination of colours, textures, and light and shadow, creating a profound emotional effect. Each painting by Hubert is a unique work of art that reflects his style and perspective on the world.
