Object description
On the pedestal is a bust of a woman. Her head is gently turned to the right, draped in fabric. The depicted attributes – laurel leaves, a hammer, a compass, and two chisels – indicate the allegory of Architecture. Such allegories in sculpture, embodied in the figure of an elegant woman, have been addressed by artists since the 16th century. In the 19th century, as marble and other material busts became increasingly common in interiors, Architecture was once again regarded as one of the dominant sciences since Antiquity (according to Vitruvius).
