Virgin Mary is the protectress, patroness, and respected saintly woman whose image can be considered part of a particular composition or independent image. The iconographic type of Virgin Hodegetria is a full-length figure reproduction of Mary holding little Jesus in her left hand. The sculpture from the village of Hvizd belongs to the Western iconographic type "Queen of Heaven", where, unlike the Eastern one, the head of the saintly woman is not covered with a veil but topped with a crown. In Ukraine, this type of image became widespread in Galicia. The frontal composition of the sculpture is designed for the interior. Soft modelling of Virgin Mary and little Jesus' faces is felt in the work. Using only smooth lines and rounded shapes, the folk master reproduced the calm image of a saintly woman with a child – the personification of a loving and strong woman.
