Biography
Dirck Barendsz (1534–1592) was a Dutch Renaissance painter from Amsterdam. His first teacher was his father, the painter Barend Dircksz, also known as Deaf Barent. The artist travelled to Italy, where he studied with Italian masters, including Titian, for seven years. He depicted religious and mythological subjects, portraits, and genre scenes
Object description
The painting, probably by Dirck Barendsz, depicts a young man, approximately forty years old. Researchers have noted that the portrayed figure bears a resemblance in style and interpretation to the models from the artist's work "The Banquet of the Officers of the Civic Guard" (1566). However, the author of this work could be another Northern Netherlandish artist of that time who worked under the creative solid influence of Dirck Barendsz in Haarlem – Maarten van Heemskerck (1498–1574), who created in a Mannerist style. He painted religious and mythological compositions and was renowned as one of the finest portraitists of his time. He also worked in graphic arts.
