Object description
A multi-figure composition in a light frame depicts a biblical scene (Exodus: 2.5-10) that became popular in the 17th century. In the foreground, against a background of trees, a group of women is depicted, one of whom is kneeling and holding a baby in her arms. This woman is the daughter of a pharaoh, showing baby Moses, found in a basket in the reeds of the Nile, to his sister Miriam and mother Jochebed. In the centre, to the left, another woman is crouching over the basket – perhaps the pharaoh's daughter's servant, or the princess herself. The plot probably depicts two scenes: the pharaoh's daughter seeing the child in the basket and, taking the baby in her arms, showing him to his relatives.
