Object description
The sculptural image of the Crucifixion suffers significant damage and losses, yet it retains its expressiveness and spiritual content. The elongated figure of Christ has survived partially – the hands and feet are missing. The Saviour's head is tilted to the right shoulder, and the oval face with a wedge-shaped beard is modelled indistinctly. The expression on his face is full of sorrow and inner concentration. Christ's body is modelled in a generalised manner, without excessive anatomical detail, which is characteristic of folk sacred carving. On his thighs is a bandage tied with a cord, with clearly carved folds and knots. The crucifixion is stylistically close to folk models carved by local craftsmen for churches. It combines simplicity of execution and deep spiritual content, with the main emphasis on facial expression and the symbolism of the composition rather than realistic details.
