Object description
The small sculptural depiction of the Crucifixion follows the Western iconographic type, in which Christ is shown dead, his feet nailed to the Cross with a single nail. The figure of the Saviour is slightly bent, his head topped with a crown of thorns, tilted to his right shoulder, emphasizing his sorrow and, at the same time, the grandeur of his humility. The figure is anatomically simplified, without detail. The master's attempts to show the thinness of the body are noticeable: the chest is worked in relief, the stomach is sunken. A certain accent in the decorative solution of the work is added by the voluminous, elaborate loincloth, schematically interpreted by rigid lines of folds. The image combines physical suffering and inner peace. The crucifixion appears as a symbol of sacrifice and a deep spiritual challenge.
