Object description
The sculptural image of a cherub was an element of decorative finishing of the altar, iconostasis, or architectural composition. The carved head of the angel has significant losses of the paint layer and primer. The elongated oval of the face with protruding cheeks, framed by waves of short hair, is distinguished by soft, generalised features. The cherub's face is characterised by a high, open forehead, large almond-shaped eyes with an upward gaze, a snub nose with flared nostrils, and expressive, plump lips. The sculpted head, accompanied by adjacent wings, is carved on a cloud. The image symbolises an angelic essence that embodies purity, innocence, and heavenly beauty. The sculptor paid particular attention to the smoothness of the contours, thanks to which the work seems alive. The volume is conveyed softly, without sharp contrasts, creating a feeling of tenderness.
