Object description
The angel's head, carved from wood, has retained traces of gilding, which gives the sculpture a decorative splendour. The child's face is rounded with generalised features. The soft contours of the eyes, small nose, and mouth are visible on the face. The childlike appearance of the head symbolises purity, innocence, and spiritual joy, characteristic of the image of a cherub. Similar sculptures created an atmosphere of heavenly radiance around the altar or iconostasis. Despite the loss of detail, the wings have retained shallow relief traces imitating feathers. Their original appearance was intended to emphasise the illusion of movement and radiance. The sculpture is characterised by rounded forms, decorativeness, and the tenderness of the image, typical of the Baroque tradition.
