Object description
Polychrome sculptural head of a cherub with generalised features. The work is executed in a manner characteristic of folk sacred sculpture. The face is somewhat simplified, the symmetry is not perfect, which adds a touching immediacy to the work: small eyes with dark pupils, expressive black eyebrows, a protruding snub nose, and a small mouth. Short dark hair is rendered with simple strokes of dark paint. Particular attention is drawn to the wings, carved in relief with a repeating motif imitating feathers, highlighted with silver paint. The work, created by a folk artist, combines naivety of form, decorativeness and sincerity of expression. The cherub is distinguished by its intimacy, warm, almost childlike image, and is an example of the folk interpretation of Christian iconography.
