Object description
The wooden carved work corresponds to the iconographic type of the cherub, traditional in Baroque art. The original surface covering of the work has been completely lost. The cherub, carved upon a cloud, conveys a sense of plastic refinement and living softness of form. The realistically executed face is endowed with pleasingly childlike features. Soft curls, a gentle turn of the head, rounded cheeks, finely delineated expressive eyes, a snub nose, and slightly parted plump lips create the impression of a radiant image embodying celestial purity and tranquillity. The depiction of the cherub personifies innocence and divine presence. The work is integral and realistic, transmitting an idealised beauty. The author skilfully combines naturalism with artistic decorativeness, embodied in the tender, idealised childlike image of the angel’s head.
