Object description
The sculptural representation of the angel’s head is characterised by delicate detailing and rich polychromy. The work is distinguished by a combination of realistic features with conventional stylisation. The expression of the texturally elaborated face of the cherub is concentrated, imbued with spiritual elevation, while the polychromy imparts greater expressiveness and lifelikeness to the image. The master seeks to reproduce not only external beauty but also to convey the inner world – the depiction appears slightly idealised, emphasising its belonging to the sacred realm. Particular attention in the work is devoted to the smoothness of contours and proportions, which render the image vivid and expressive. The volume of the angel’s head is conveyed softly, without sharp contrasts, creating an impression of plastic tenderness. The countenance is imbued with inner experience – not dramatic, but rather spiritually contemplative.
