Biography
Stanislaw Wyspianski was born in 1869 in Krakow. He studied at the Jagiellonian University and Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was a member of the Young Poland movement, and art editor of the weekly Życie (Life). Stanislaw Wyspianski is known as a playwright and poet, modernist painter, and designer. The artist died in November 1907. He was buried in Krakow.
Object description
a) The image represents a man's head with a thick beard and long mustache. The face is defined by frowning eyebrows, a thin nose, and wide-open eyes; he is looking at the viewer. On his head there is a headdress that resembles a Roman Catholic episcopal mitre. b) In the left part of the work there is a sketch of a female silhouette’s profile; her head is slightly tilted forward. Symmetrical strands of long hair are falling down to her chest. Facial features are painted schematically.
Inscriptions
a) In the lower right part of the work there is an author monogram and date 1900. In the upper right part of the work there is an illegible inscription in Polish.
