Object description
A wicker basket tilted to one side, spilt grapes, and three apples are depicted in the centre of this masterful still life. A parrot sits on the basket, eagerly inspecting the ripe fruits. On the right, a painted porcelain ceramic dish filled with lingonberries is on a raised platform. On the left is a branch of chrysanthemums, some of which have not bloomed yet. This still life was created by an unknown Austrian artist in the 18th century. Still lifes with fruits, vegetables, and berries most often represent the concept of fertility. In this work, many bunches of grapes emphasise this message even more vividly because the image of grapes was typically associated with earthly fertility and human reproduction.
