Biography
The artist was born into a family of a doctor and an art collector. Initially, the young man studied music, but his interest in painting prevailed. He entered the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts to study under Antonio Puccinelli. However, he was disappointed with his classes because academicism did not correspond to his tastes and aspirations. After visiting Paris, Marius de Maria became interested in the Barbizon School, which greatly influenced his work. In 1892, the artist moved to Venice, where he was keen on Venetian painting. After a short trip to Northern Europe, the painter was engrossed in Rembrandt's works.
Object description
Marius de Maria was known for his nocturnes, which represented Venice at night. The Lviv work is a vivid example of Marius de Maria's mature style. It was created in 1897 when the artist had already returned to Venice. He depicted a gondolier floating across the city at night against the background of palaces. The artist skilfully depicted the moonlight illuminating the buildings using innovative impressionistic methods.
