Biography
Philipp Peter Roos, a German artist, was born in Frankfurt. He studied in the studio of his father, the landscape painter Johann Heinrich Roos. The artist arrived in Rome in 1677 and began painting animalistic and pastoral compositions against the background of Italian landscapes. In Rome, he collaborated with the painter Giacinto Brandi and later married his daughter. In 1684, the artist and his family moved to the small town of Tivoli, a tiny village on the outskirts of Rome. Philipp Peter Roos specialised in multi-figure animalistic compositions, which he executed with rough strokes, mostly in dark tones. Although the artist created numerous variations of the same pastoral scenes, they remained popular among collectors until the end of the 19th century.
Object description
"The Herd" is a typical example of Philipp Peter Roos' animalistic painting. It can be attributed to his Italian period of creativity when the master formed the subject of his works. It depicts a young shepherd with a dog who leads cattle to pasture. In the background is a panoramic view of the hills on the outskirts of Rome. The painting is executed in the artist's typical brown colour scheme.
