Biography
Jacob Ferdinand Saeys began his artistic career in Antwerp. There, he studied under Wilhelm Schubert van Ehrenberg, an architect and painter of architectural types. He specialised in depicting imaginary palaces and the Baroque and Renaissance buildings, complementing them with gallant scenes. The artist sometimes combined his architectural views with biblical or mythological subjects. However, most often, he depicted the gallant scenes from his imagination. Jacob Ferdinand Saeys was skilled at using perspective and realistically depicting various materials. In 1679, he joined the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. He was mentioned as an artist in Mechelen. Later, the artist moved to Vienna, where he was first mentioned in 1694.
Object description
The work depicts the monumental arch of the palace, embellished with reliefs and lavishly decorated columns. The courtyard of the palace with a fountain is depicted nearby, and the main gate with a colonnade is represented in the distance. This architectural view is an excellent example of the artist's imaginative compositions. The masterful use of perspective and light and shadow transitions add volume and realism to the image. The picture was created in 1719 and has the author's signature in the lower right corner.
