Object description
Among the series of drawings in which Guardi reproduced the view of San Giorgio Maggiore is "View of the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore from under the portico of the Doge's Palace". The artist chose a particular perspective that has no analogy among his works (or at least none that have been discovered to date), namely the view from under the gallery of the Doge's Palace. From there you have a view of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, with gondolas and boats in the foreground, which the artist painted in a light manner. The motifs of the arcade of the Doge's Palace appear in the artist's mature period; in particular, the painting The Arcade of the Doge's Palace and a series of canvases with the same architectural view are preserved. It should be noted that the landscapes of Venice from under the arches are characteristic of the mature and late period of his work. The sketchy and light manner of the figures and the details tend to suggest that the painting was made closer to the 1780s.
