Object description
The painting is a copy of a work by David Teniers the Younger, which is housed in the Johannesburg Pinacotheca. Teniers addressed various themes in his work: portraits, landscapes, religious and mythological subjects. However, his genre scenes from peasant life and satirical animalistic depictions were the most popular. These works were in demand in the art market and were frequently copied. The picture "The Smoking Monkeys", in which animals serve as a metaphor for criticising human stupidity, reflects an idea of the transience of life and the futility of worldly pleasures.
