Object description
The painting by an anonymous Italian master depicts Madonna and a child, one of the most popular images in Italian art. The Virgin Mary is holding Jesus Christ and looking at him in the foreground. The child, gazing at the viewer, is holding her hand. Because of her hairstyle and jewellery, the Madonna resembles a Renaissance aristocratic lady from the first half of the 16th century. The figures are depicted in the garden, known as the hortus conclusus, symbolising the Virgin Mary's bodily purity. A stylised landscape with an orange tree is visible in the background. The image was intended for personal prayer.
