This dynamic battle scene demonstrates Turkish horsemen fleeing from the battlefield. In the foreground is a Turkish soldier with a spear galloping on a horse. The body of a killed Turkish archer lies on the ground next to him. Behind, two Turkish horsemen are climbing the hill and looking back. A little further, the artist depicted other riders. A panoramic view of the plain where the battle takes place can be seen in the background. The sheet is part of the "Capricci di Varie Battaglie" ("Fantasies of Various Battles") series, which consists of 16 engravings. It was first published in Rome in 1635. The main theme of the series is imaginary battles between the armies of different nations. Johann Wilhelm Baur most likely began his work on engravings during his trip to Italy in 1634. This series was dedicated to the noble Italian family Orsini.
