Object description
The full-length figure of Saint James the Elder is depicted with his right foot outstretched, and his head slightly turned to the right. The man is dressed in a long yellow tunic, leaving only his feet exposed, and his shoulders are covered by a wide drapery folded over his chest, one edge of which falls from his left hand. The saint's right hand is pressed against his body, while his left hand is half-bent with open fingers: its pose suggests that it could be a traveller's cane. The artist has reproduced the noble face in a specific way – with a high forehead, clearly elaborated arched eyelids covering almond-shaped eyes, and a wide mouth with an expressive beak-like upper lip, surrounded by a small beard and short, wavy dark hair. A unique element of the saint's clothing is a brown hat with a wide brim. This was one of the attributes of James the Elder, the patron saint of pilgrims.
