Object description
In the eighteenth century, professional sculptors borrowed subjects and characters unusual for Ukrainian iconography, later adopted by folk artists. Among them is St. Stephen, the first martyr, whose worship is the oldest. In glorifying him, the Eastern Church gave the saint a triple title, calling him an apostle, the first martyr, and an archdeacon. The compositional basis of the sculpture of St. Stephen from the village of Sprynia is strict frontality. The master carved his work from a solid piece of wood, typical for folk sculptors. The stooping figure in a deacon's robe, with his arms spread wide, is distinguished by its soft lines, which are accentuated by the rhythm of the elements of the robe carved in low relief.
