Object description
The sculpture of the saint is rendered in an S-shaped silhouette (figura serpentinata), which is dominant in Baroque plastic art. His contrapposto figure, with the left leg extended, is depicted in an expressive pose with a theatrically extended arm. The saint is dressed in a long garment, girded with a belt. The dynamic lines of the drapery are formed by massive folds that envelop the figure or cascade in horizontal strands. The geometrisation of the folds is characteristic of Western masters from German-speaking countries. A fragment of a chain and short strands of wavy hair remain on the saint's neck. The relatively small sculpture is significantly damaged (the left arm, head, and front part of the torso are missing), which prevents a full understanding of the sculptor's original intent.
