Object description
Images of angels' heads were among the most numerous sculptural groups in decorating churches and their interiors. They usually filled the empty places of iconostasis and altars. Also, they were used as a decoration of the royal gates. Such figures did not always have symmetrical proportions of faces. The softness of the shapes and clarity of the lines distinguishes the polychrome angel's head from the Gallery's collection. A plump oval face with a high open forehead is depicted in peace and thoughtfulness. Wide open big eyes, a snub nose, and barely half-open lips make the cherub look childishly cute. Light curls of dark hair, made with incised spiral lines, complete the image of a winged head. The sculptor created an exciting type, providing the figure with individual features.
