Object description
In their works, folk masters rather conditionally followed the canonical iconography. It resulted from understanding certain images from the perspective of folk vision and local traditions. An extraordinary interpretation of the plot is distinguished by the sculptural image of Christ, in which the author's approach is felt. In the master's imagination, the figure of the risen Saviour appeared on the tomb. The figure is carved from a single piece of wood. Christ is reproduced on his knees, his arms bent in the elbows and leant on the coffin's lid. The slouched figure is dressed in a long, saturated blue tunic with a waistband. On the head of Christ is a crown of thorns, interpreted with twisted, smooth bundles. On an elongated face, the artist schematically reproduced his eyes, nose, and mouth; he marked with a shallow carving the texture of the beard on the oval face. The soft modelling of the image distinguishes the sculptural composition. The draperies of the garment are interpreted by gentle horizontal strands, made with shallow deepening, that repeat the movement of the body of Christ. Soft clothing lines are rounded along the contour, and the gentle expression of a rough face enhances the inner peace of the saintly man.
