Object description
One of the best examples of monumental folk sculpture is the Crucifixion. Images of this type were placed in churches, chapels, and roadside shrines. The sculpture has suffered considerable losses; only the face and a torso fragment have survived, allowing us to see the sad image of Christ, which was part of the whole composition. The saint's head is tilted towards his right shoulder. The face is narrowed downwards, framed by neatly arranged, barely elaborated beard curls. The head is crowned by a wreath of thorns formed by two intertwined bundles. Strands of hair protrude from underneath, represented in deep, ritualised lines with pointed ribs. The suffering image of Christ dying in agony is emphasised by the closed eyes, the tight lips, and the two furrows that cross the forehead.
