Object description
The sculpture shows a full-length Evangelist with a book in his left hand and his right hand raised. The figure of the saint, stooping in a contrapposto position, is restrained in movement, and the work has a certain static quality. The Evangelist's head is tilted forward and slightly turned towards his right shoulder. The ascetic image of a person lost in thought is conveyed by the elongated oval of a thin face with protruding cheekbones, sunken cheeks, a high forehead with a low line of bulging eyebrows, a straight nose with flared nostrils, open eyes, and a wide mouth. Dynamic strands of wavy hair and a long beard falling to the chest add to the emotional tension of the picture. The Evangelist is dressed in a long, belted shirt with buttons on the chest. The saint's clothes expose his feet, on which he wears Roman sandals. The drapery of the garments evenly envelops the man's figure and falls in vertical folds. There is a certain discrepancy in the proportions of the sculpture: the elongated face is too thin in relation to the stocky figure. Despite the emotional image, the work is characterised by restraint in the interpretation of the folds of the clothes and the choice of pose.
