Biography
Thomas Wijck (1616−1647) was a Dutch School painter. He received artistic education in Italy under the guidance of his father. Wijck painted seascapes, ports, interiors of rural houses, inns, fairs, alchemist laboratories, landscapes with ruins, palaces, and other buildings in the Italian style. The artist's works have a pleasant and warm colouring. Wijck cannot be considered a purely national artist – his sketches made during his extended stay in Italy, which he used for his later paintings, significantly weaken his importance in the Dutch School. However, several works by the author depict the interiors of Dutch buildings, landscapes with dunes, etc.
Object description
The painting depicts a fortress with a group of people in front of it. In the background is a dock with a sailboat and people carrying cargo. In the distance, mountains and clouds can be seen against a blue sky. The artist meticulously portrayed the landscape and characters, giving them emotional depth. Wijck depicted the contrast between the architectural and natural landscape through subtle lighting effects and incorporated enigmatic forms in architecture and hills, against which he placed this genre scene.
