Object description
Cherubs are celestial creatures with wings, which are mentioned in the Bible and used to glorify the holiness of God. Sculptures of this type can be seen in altar compositions or as a complement to iconostases. The cherub figure is characterised by its expressive plasticity. The dynamism can be seen in the expressive turn of the head, the hair's loose curls, and the wings' treatment. The angel's head, with its round face and plump cheeks, is full of moody spirituality and earthly rejection. The cherub's eyes, covered by eyelids with skilfully rendered lashes, the massive forehead, the snub nose, and the smiling expression reveal the hand of a professional sculptor.
