Object description
The hand cross belongs to the typological subgroup of liturgical crosses intended for worship. Liturgical objects form a quantitatively large and iconographically rich group. In the Eastern rite, such crosses appeared in the 15th century. The cross from the village of Lysnevychi is a seven-pointed cross with a short handle. It was made using contour, notched, and flat relief carving techniques, which allows the carved elements to rise above the background. On the front of the cross is the crucifix, which takes up most of the stem. The figure of the Saviour, sketched with rough outlines and slightly elaborated details, is crouched. His head is inclined towards his right shoulder, and his palms are open. The iconographic composition of the Crucifixion is framed by a geometric pattern of triangles along the outline of the cross. In profiled circles, at the ends of each frame are two flat carved schematic profile figures, graphically elaborated and with small outlined details. In the central part of the back of the cross is a carved figure of the Virgin Mary wearing a crown and holding the Christ Child in her arms in a circular frame. Below this is a schematic outline of St. Nicholas. The back of each end of the frame is identical to the ornamental design on the front.
