The compositional centre of the altar cross is the Crucifixion, a common subject among professional and folk artists. The crucifix from the Ivanivtsi village was made following the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is nailed to the cross with four nails, his legs are positioned parallel, and his palms are open. The artist depicted the Saviour as deceased with his eyes closed and head tilted to the right. The author's desire for anatomical accuracy is evident in the meticulously detailed face of the saint, his chest, arms, and legs. The crown of thorns is depicted as two intertwined rolls with protruding spikes. The loincloth fastened with a large knot adds decorativeness to the composition. The sculptural image is imbued with naive realism. Using the limited means characteristic of folk art, the sculptor conveyed the unspeakable agonies of Christ.
