Object description
The full-length sculpture portrays the pope in a restrained Baroque pose. His raised head is turned to his right shoulder, his right hand is pressed to his chest, and his left hand is held out to the side. On his head is a camauro – a cap worn by the pontiff in the cold season. The master pays little attention to the volumetric plasticity of the somewhat schematically rendered face but focuses on conveying a prayerful expression, emphasised by the closed eyes. The pope's garment covers his entire body, exposing only his feet. The drapery of the attire is restrained, dominated by straight, long folds, and worked out with parallel recesses. The sculpture is characterised by expressing emotions without exaggerated gestures and emotional tension. The artwork's composition, utilising the classical contrapposto, exhibits a stiff hieratic pose and restrained movement.
