Object description
The full-length portrayal of the pope is rendered in a contrapposto, somewhat restrained Baroque pose. His head is turned to his right shoulder; his arms are outstretched. On his head is a camauro, a hat worn by the pontiff in cold weather. The master paid little attention to the volumetric plasticity of the somewhat schematically rendered face. The pope's garment covers his entire body, exposing only his feet. The drapery of the attire is restrained, dominated by straight, long folds worked out by parallel recesses. Despite maintaining the Baroque emotional excitement of the image, the sculpture is characterised by staticness and slowed movements.
