Object description
The full-length sculptural depiction represents a figure of a saint – likely Gregory, one of the Church Fathers – rendered in an S-shaped pose characteristic of Baroque art. The contrapposto figure with theatrically spread arms is crafted in a Baroque and Rococo style and is marked by emotional intensity. The author focused on conveying form, mood, and emotions rather than strict anatomical accuracy, evident in the figure's slight disproportions and narrow, drooping shoulders. The primary attention was given to the face: a square-shaped visage, small eyes outlined by eyelid arches, prominent cheekbones, sunken cheeks, a straight nose, and an open mouth. The dynamic folds of the clothing enhance the expressiveness of the figure; the drapery forms unique abstract, angular planes with geometric sharply cut folds. The work is striking in its expressiveness. The style of image reproduction and the manner of drapery carving resemble the works of the 18th-century sculptor Antoni Osinski.
