Object description
The hand cross is carved from a single piece of wood. On the front side, in the central part of the work, is a silhouette of a man with his arms raised. The folk master uniquely reproduced the Crucifixion, using the technique of flat contour carving. The frontal image with a large head, small raised arms, long torso and short, thin legs bears little resemblance to Christ. The face has closed eyes, a wedge-shaped nose, and a large open mouth. The figure of the saint is rendered flat, with a graphic outline. The surface of the cross is not filled with an image but is decorated with horizontal shallow parallel lines that outline the shape of edges along the contour of the front side. On the back of the hand cross, one can see a schematic image of the Crucifixion outlined in a precise contour, above which is the inscription "INRI".
