Biography
Ludwig Grunfeld (1812–1888) was an Austrian Romantic-era landscape artist. An alumnus of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He worked as a decorative artist at the Vienna Court Opera House.
Object description
A Romantic mountain landscape featuring a river and waterfall, enlivened by a staffage scene with people. In the centre of the composition, against a clear sky bathed in the rays of the setting sun, is depicted a tall, barren mountain with a broad expanse of the river stretching out at its base. In the foreground, on either side of a small bay, are wooded cliffs with a waterfall. On the right, a young couple is depicted in traditional Austrian national dress on the rocky riverbank. In the distance, a small boat with fishermen is visible on the river.
